Don't allow your silence to make you complicit!

I’ve worked the majority of my career with Black and Brown youth, opening their eyes to a world that some may not have envisioned prior to being in an environment that shifts their perspectives, causing their dreams to soar! It never became easier to explain the hard truths about racial inequality to children who just didn’t understand it even when it was dropped in their laps! Many times they became very confused and chose to ignore it, or became angry about it, and then there were those who chose to do something by educating themselves and speaking out about things that were not just!

It breaks my heart and picks at my soul, that in the year 2020, a man is still hunted down and killed upon suspicion simply because of the hue of his skin. It makes me sick to my core and sometimes I don’t how to make sense of these horrible actions, just like the children who called me teacher!

In plain terms, racism is a system designed to oppress Black people and other groups of color via systems: jobs, policing, government, social organizations, government, business and banking, education etc. At the same time, White people are given an advantage due to skin color whether qualified or not.

If there’s one thing that anger can do, it is propel us to act! We have to channel any negative emotions that we feel, to bring about changes that will make things better for those who will come after us. Even as I type, my heart is heavy, because again, it’s the year 2020! And as I think about those that came before me that kept on even though it was 1900, 1920, 1955, etc, I shall not grow weary! I will continue to place one foot in front of the other, and do my part to make this a better world, even if I never get the chance to experience it.
